ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Enzo Esposito was born in Benevento in 1946 and has been living and working in Milan for more than twenty years.
A leading figure in the artistic scene of the 1980s, Esposito took part in all the major exhibitions of that period that marked the transition from “conceptual” art to “painting.”
After a phase of development within a conceptual art environment and formal rigor, he was among the first artists to foresee, in the late 1970s, a return to painting through “environments.” His first installations date back to 1977—paintings executed directly on gallery walls, where the imposing use of color creates strong emotional engagement. During those years, his work caught the attention of Renato Barilli, who included Esposito in the group of “Nuovi Nuovi,” within the “aniconic” branch, with whom he participated in numerous group exhibitions in the most important international museums throughout the 1980s.

The following period was marked by an abstract expressionism characterized by intense luminosity and increasingly broad, expansive fields of color. The almost always monumental dimensions of his works serve to emphasize the objective value of painting as an immersive and demanding experience, both for the creator and the observer.
“My work is not narrative; it is a dialogue with the surface, an event of painting. There are no icons. There are no titles. Giving a title means setting a boundary, and I do not want boundaries…” (E. Esposito, Lisa Licitra Ponti, Domus No. 653, 1984).
