ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Renzo Crociara was born in Codigoro (Ferrara) on February 4, 1950. From a very young age, he dedicated himself to painting, starting with an intimate social-themed figurative style before transitioning to an extreme form of realism.
In the late 1970s, he began working on large-format canvases, almost exclusively self-portraits. With these works, he held a solo exhibition at the Center for Visual Arts in the Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara in 1982. In the meantime, he traveled to France, Spain, and the United States. In 1983, he exhibited at Plusart in Venice-Mestre.
Over time, his painting evolved, returning to a classical figurative style. His subjects were not random: interiors, beds, shirts, and everyday objects. As Franco Solmi explained: “…glasses, a plane ticket, a postal envelope, a leather jacket become elements of a distinct individuality, of an unfolding story…”.

In 2005, Mondadori published the book Renzo Crociara: 1975/2005, encompassing the artistic journey of this important painter, with a critical essay by Vittorio Sgarbi. Sgarbi concluded: “…The process of internalizing reality has now been fully accomplished, paralleling Crociara’s maturation as a man and as an artist. How distant his early works seem now—though highly commendable—when his encounter with reality was still direct, instinctive, and unfiltered. Now everything has changed in Crociara: his still lifes and landscapes have become places of the soul, mysterious and solitary, capable of captivating us and touching us deeply.”
